Little Feat: Feats Don't Fail Me Now LP
(1974; Warner)
Southern fried. Waiting for Columbus is their landmark set, but the title track here is killer. Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Rait are among the backing vocalists (course, Mick Taylor guests on Columbus). Recommended by English dude on N train! "One break," according to the rappers he was traveling with for a video shoot (didn't catch the name).
Lou Rawls: Live double-LP
(1978; Philadelphia International)
Slick ballads and standards on Broadway backed by the early Philadelphia-sound disco pioneers MSFB Orchestra (search: "Love Is the Message" Tom Moulton mix). "Lou's Rap" is not what you'd hope.
Also, just came across Glasgow's the Cinematics. Glad to see the NME is upfront about being a fashion mag: "Sounds like what Editors were doing two years ago and NME can't help but feel that music's moved on to bigger and better things without The Cinematics." Sorry, you're not new rave enough! (Bethan Cole has more on the "raveless new rave," via K-Punk.)
UPDATE: "Weezy" is fun to say. And don't sleep on the new David Torn.
